What is the most memorable puppet you have created?
Hermia – a giant puppet I created for Night Parade last year. It really expressed all my thoughts on giant puppet making.

A giant puppet contains lots of parts. Which part do you start with?
I start with the easiest parts first. Taking the first step requires a lot of courage.

How long does it take to create a giant puppet?
It takes around one to two months. First I need to collect information, draft the design, create models, output construction drawings, craft the puppet, prepare lighting equipment, paste the paper, colour the puppet, put all the different parts together and do different kinds of testing. During the process, I also need some time just to daydream and think.

Do you have a puppet-making tip you can share?
It’s important to make sure that the centre of gravity and the weight is balanced.

Besides creating the giant puppets, you also control them and interact with the crowd during the parade. How does that feel?
I really enjoy being part of the parade every year, and being able to bring some happiness to this stressful city.

Do you have any advice to youngsters who are passionate about arts?
Don’t be an armchair strategist! Actions speak louder than words. If you’re interested in something, just do it!

What is your favourite book?
“Disgrace” by J.M. Coetzee, the winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize for Literature. It’s a really powerful and profound book.
